Microsoft settles VimetX suit for US$200m

20 May 2010 - United States

Microsoft has ended its patent suit against technology firm VimetX by agreeing to licence patents relating to internet communication for US$200m.

The settlement follows a March jury verdict which went against Microsoft, after a court ordered the software firm to pay US$105.8m to VimetX for patent infringement.

As part of the judgment, Microsoft was ordered to pay US$71.75m for infringing a virtual private network patent and US$34m for violating a patent intended for setting up a VPN using a secure domain name service.

Days after that ruling, VimetX filed another suit alleging that Microsoft continued to infringe its patent in its Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 platforms.

All lawsuits will be dismissed as part of the settlement. Other details of the settlement were not revealed.
