Motorola seeking ban on BlackBerry phones
Mobile phone maker Motorola has filed a case with the US International Trade Commission seeking to ban the import of certain BlackBerry smart-phones.
Motorola alleges that Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry phone, used five of its patents for mobiles relating to Wi-Fi access, user interface, power management, data protection, and storing messages, without permission.
According to Motorola, RIM used to have a licence for the technology in question, but that agreement expired in 2007.
"Motorola will continue to take all necessary steps to protect its research and development and intellectual property, which are critical to the company's business," Jonathan Meyer, senior vice president of intellectual property law at Motorola, said in a statement.
A court case involving the two companies is still pending in the US courts, with complaints filed in 2008 by each firm accusing the other of patent infringement.
